Getting back into Shape

Tips and Tricks to help new mummies to regain their figure...

It is easy to "let go"during your pregnancy. "Eating for Two"is a common saying, and mums are encouraged to partake in their favourite foods.  This is especially true if the mother suffered from morning sickness during the first trimester. The appetite returns after this time and mums are enjoying their favourite meals again. However the last trimester makes it difficult to enjoy physical exercise. Then after the birth, mothers naively think that the tummy will shrink back to normal. Frankly, that was my belief as well.  I imagined an inflated ballon deflating back to its original size. Unfortunately that is not the case. Imagine my dismay when my tummy still looked "five-months-pregnant" many weeks after birth!  I was still wearing my maternity clothes because my pre-pregnancy clothing did not fit anymore. This can cause some mums to feel depressed about their body shape, and those two-hour feedings did not improve my looks in any way.  So its understandable that new mums need some encouragement to motive them to get fit and healthy again.

1. Breastfeed your baby - Yes, it is said that nursing your baby helps you burn calories. Yes, this is true, assuming you stick to a healthy diet. I've spoken to one mum who slimmed down so much that she regained her figure from high school Amazing, I know. Unfortunately this never happened to me as I had difficulty nursing my baby. My skin blistered and bled so baby did not enjoy it:-(

2. Enjoy exercise with your Baby - Getting fit again can be as easy as pushing baby in the stroller around the block; gentle walks with baby in a sling or carrier.  While it would be ideal to have someone help you care for baby while you enjoy a Zumba class - this is not generally possible for most mums. So make the most of the fresh air and take baby out to enjoy nature. Forget about the mess at home; forget about the things you need to do. Just let your mind destress and take time out for 30mins a day. This will improve your mood better than any drug can ever achieve.
